Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?

The “fact” that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes. I frequently read confident statements like, “when a bag of chips is cheaper than a head of broccoli …” or “it’s more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonald’s than to cook a healthy meal for them at home.”

this is interesting
but cost is not the only factor - the food you can get also depends on whether you have time to make it (probably not if you’re working 2-3 jobs), whether you live nearer to a grocery store or a mcdonalds, and the cost of transit and such
but this is still something i hear all the time

The other thing to consider here is this…
Where can ANYONE buy just a cup of rice? You can’t. And while rice as a whole may be cheap, they are comparing the cost of one meals worth of rice, when the reality is that you have to buy several meals worth. That’s how the grocery store works. 4 slices of bread? Can’t do it.
And even then, the worse-for-you bread is usually cheaper. I know around here basic white bread is about $1.50 a loaf. Whereas whole grain bread can creep up to the $3-$4 range.
There are a lot of factors to consider that the Times didn’t accurately reflect, if you ask me.
